A camera tells the driver what is happening now. A recorder tells the fleet what happened last Tuesday. For insurance disputes, driver coaching and compliance, the recorder is the part that matters, and it is the part most often specified badly.

Two decisions dominate: storage type and connectivity. SD-card recorders are compact, vibration-tolerant and cheap to maintain — a failed card is a five-dollar replacement. Hard-drive recorders hold far more data and suit long-distance fleets, provided you specify automatic disk heating for cold climates. For connectivity, GPS gives you location and speed; 4G gives you remote live view and cloud-stored alarm clips.

Choosing a recorder

Count channels honestly. Add up driver, side, rear, cabin and any cargo camera. Buying an 8-channel unit to run three cameras wastes money; buying four channels and needing five costs more.
Choose storage by retention policy. If your policy is 7 days, SD cards are enough and simpler. If it is 30 days or the fleet runs long routes, specify HDD — and add disk heating if the fleet operates below freezing.
Decide whether you need remote view. GPS alone gives you location, speed and trip replay. 4G adds live view and cloud alarm clips, which is what most insurers and safety managers actually ask for.
Check temperature ratings. Our SD recorders are rated −40 °C to +85 °C, which matters in both Gulf summers and Nordic winters.
Plan the upgrade path. USB firmware upgrade from a FAT32 stick in 1–2 minutes means a fleet can be updated across a depot without removing units.

Recording law varies by country. Many jurisdictions restrict cabin audio recording, and some require a visible notice to drivers. We supply configurations with audio disabled where that is the requirement — tell us the destination market when you order.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

H.264 or H.265?

H.265 typically halves storage for the same visual quality, which either doubles retention or halves the drive you need to buy. It costs slightly more CPU and a little more licence cost. For 8-channel systems H.265 pays for itself quickly; for a 2-channel dashcam, H.264 is fine.

Can I view a vehicle live from my phone?

Yes, on 4G models. Our platforms use standard mobile apps (Uboxpro, CMSV and equivalents) that let you add multiple vehicles, view live, download recorded files and receive alarm notifications. You need a data SIM with coverage in the operating country.

What happens to footage if the vehicle battery is disconnected?

The MDVR-708C supports a UPS power input, which keeps the recorder writing long enough to flush the current file cleanly, and the dashcam range includes low-voltage protection and built-in batteries. Without that protection a hard power cut can leave the last file corrupted.

How much footage can I store?

At 1080P, 25 fps and H.265, budget approximately 1 GB per channel per hour. Four channels fill a 256GB card in about two and a half days; eight channels fill a 1TB drive in a little over four days. Event-based recording for parked vehicles extends this considerably.
