MDVR Buying Guide: How to Specify a Mobile DVR
A mobile DVR is specified by five numbers: channels, storage, compression, connectivity and temperature. Get those right and most of the specification writes itself.
A dashcam records one view. An MDVR records the vehicle: driver, sides, rear, cabin and load. The difference in specification is not just channel count — it is power handling, storage, temperature range and the ability to survive an electrical environment that would destroy consumer electronics.
Channels: count honestly, then add one
List every view you need today, then consider what you may add. Typical configurations are four channels (front, rear, two sides), six (adding a cabin and a load camera) or eight (full coverage plus 360 inputs).
- Buying an 8-channel unit to run three cameras wastes money on hardware you will never use.
- Buying four channels and needing five means replacing the whole unit — a far more expensive mistake.
- Remember that a 360 system may consume four channels on its own, and that DMS and ADAS each take one.
Storage: SD card or hard drive?

A failed SD card is a five-dollar replacement and a two-minute swap. A failed hard disk is a workshop visit. That asymmetry is why many urban fleets standardise on SD despite the lower capacity, and why long-haul fleets standardise on disk despite the complexity.
Compression: H.264 or H.265?
H.265 typically halves storage for the same perceived quality, which either doubles your retention or halves the drive you need to buy. For an 8-channel system that is a significant saving and it pays back quickly. For a two-channel dashcam, H.264 is usually sufficient.
Connectivity: what you get at each level
- GPS gives you position, speed, trip replay and a time reference that is independent of the vehicle. This is the baseline for any fleet.
- WiFi lets you pull footage when the vehicle returns to the depot without removing the card. Useful, cheap, and limited by range.
- 4G gives live view, remote file download and cloud-stored alarm clips. This is what insurers and safety managers usually mean when they ask for "remote access".
- Cloud alarm storage means the clips that matter are stored off the vehicle, so a destroyed or stolen recorder does not take the evidence with it.
Temperature and power: the specification that prevents returns
Our SD recorder platform is rated from −40 °C to +85 °C, which matters in both Gulf summers and Nordic winters. The other half of the problem is power: a commercial vehicle electrical system produces transients that consumer equipment does not survive. Look for reverse-polarity protection, transient suppression and a wide input range. If the vehicle cuts power abruptly, UPS input support keeps the recorder writing long enough to close the current file cleanly — without it, the last file is often corrupt and that is frequently the file you needed.
Sizing storage with a worked example
Six channels of 1080P at 25 fps on H.265, running roughly 10 hours a day, with a 30-day retention policy. Budget 1 GB per channel per hour: six channels × 10 hours = 60 GB per day, so 30 days needs about 1.8 TB. That points to a hard-drive platform with a 2TB drive and disk heating if the fleet operates in winter. If the policy were 7 days instead, a 500–600 GB budget would be enough and an SD-card platform with a daily download routine would do the job.
A short specification checklist
- Channel count, with one spare capacity in mind.
- Storage type and size, derived from the retention policy.
- Compression: H.265 for six channels or more.
- GPS as standard; 4G if remote access is required.
- Operating temperature matching the operating climate.
- UPS input or low-voltage protection if power cuts are likely.
- Mounting and damping appropriate to the vehicle type.
- Alarm inputs matched to the sensors you intend to connect.
Frequently asked questions
How long can an MDVR record?
It depends on channel count, resolution, compression and storage. At 1080P, 25 fps and H.265, budget roughly 1 GB per channel per hour of continuous recording. Four channels fill a 256GB card in about two and a half days; eight channels fill a 1TB drive in a little over four days.
Is a hard drive or an SD card more reliable in a vehicle?
An SD card, because it has no moving parts. A hard drive needs damped mounting and, in cold climates, disk heating. Hard drives are chosen for capacity, not for reliability — if your retention policy fits on cards, cards are the simpler answer.
Do I need 4G, or is GPS enough?
GPS gives location, speed and trip history without a data contract. 4G adds live viewing, remote download and cloud alarm clips. If your process involves reviewing incidents within a day, or your insurer asks for remote access, you need 4G. If you review footage at the depot, GPS is enough.
How often should firmware be updated?
Apply updates when there is a specific fix or feature you need, not routinely. Our platforms upgrade from a FAT32 USB stick in one to two minutes, which makes a depot-wide update practical without removing any units.
