Blind spot collisions with cyclists and pedestrians are the most expensive incidents a fleet can have, in both money and reputation. A standard side camera only helps if the driver remembers to look. An AI camera helps whether the driver looks or not.

Our BSD cameras detect people and vehicles inside a configurable zone and respond with a built-in buzzer and a three-colour alarm light. Because the algorithm runs on the camera, the system works even when the recorder is offline, and it can be installed on a vehicle that has no MDVR at all.

BSD, DMS or both?

They solve different problems and are usually sold together on fleets with a formal safety programme.

  • BSD (blind spot detection) looks outside the vehicle. Fit it on the near side of trucks and buses in urban duty cycles, on tippers and mixers where the driver sits high, and on any vehicle that shares road space with cyclists.
  • DMS (driver monitoring) looks at the driver. Fit it where long shifts and night driving create fatigue risk, where operators must comply with a distraction policy, or where insurers offer a premium reduction for monitoring.
  • Forward ADAS looks ahead. Collision warning and headway monitoring usually ship as part of an MDVR or 360 platform rather than as a separate camera.

What affects detection accuracy in the real world

  • Mounting height and angle. A camera looking down at 30–45° sees the ground zone where a cyclist actually is; a camera pointed at the horizon mostly sees sky.
  • Detection zone size. Set it too large and every parked car triggers an alarm; drivers then ignore the system. Tune the zone at commissioning on a real street.
  • Alarm fatigue. Use the buzzer only for genuine close-range threats and the light for awareness. A system that cries wolf is worse than no system.
  • Night performance. IR reach matters — 15 m of usable IR covers the blind spot zone on a typical truck but not a highway overtake.

Frequently asked questions

Does the AI camera need a recorder or a display?

The JPC-181 does not. It detects, decides and warns entirely on board, so it can be fitted to an existing vehicle in under an hour. If you also want the footage recorded, connect it to an MDVR like any other AHD camera.

Can the detection zone be limited to the near side only?

Yes — the zone is adjustable at installation so the camera can cover the near side, the front corner or a full lateral band, depending on where you mount it.

Do you offer an algorithm we can retrain for our own use case?

Our engineering team develops BSD, DMS, thermal and radar algorithms in-house, and we take on OEM projects where the detection target, alarm logic and thresholds are customised. Volume commitments apply; talk to us about your application.

Is the alarm suitable for noisy cabs?

Yes. The built-in buzzer is designed for in-cab use, and where the cab is exceptionally loud we recommend adding the external speaker offered with the 360 and MDVR platforms so the warning is unmistakable.
