Vision Systems for Mining, Quarry and Construction Plant

On a quarry haul road the visibility problem is not darkness — it is dust, vibration and scale. The specification that works on a highway truck will not survive a season on plant.

≤ 250 mThermal detection of a person
IP67 / IP69KRequired sealing for plant duty
5GVibration rating for thermal units
20×Optical zoom on the PTZ inspection camera

Why plant duty is a different specification

  • Dust defeats illumination. Infrared LED cameras illuminate the particles in front of the lens rather than the scene behind them, which is why a truck camera is nearly useless in a quarry haze. Thermal imaging does not have this problem.
  • Vibration is severe and continuous. Plant vibrates at higher amplitude and lower frequency than a road vehicle, which destroys flexible mounts and connector terminations.
  • Scale changes the angles. A haul truck’s tyres are taller than a person. Cameras must be aimed to cover a much larger ground footprint, and the operator sits far higher than in a road truck.
  • Impact is expected. Rocks hit camera housings. Protective covers are part of the specification, not an accessory.

Thermal versus LED in dust

The JPC-256AI uses a 256 × 192 vanadium-oxide detector with a NETD of ≤ 50 mK, giving person detection to under 85 m with the wide lens and under 250 m with the 10 mm lens. Because it detects emitted heat rather than reflected light, it sees through dust that would render an LED camera useless. For haul roads at night this is the single most valuable camera on the machine.

The PTZ camera for high-level inspection

Where the machine needs to inspect its own structure or a worksite above it — crane jibs, high-voltage insulators, tower structures — the 20× optical zoom PTZ camera provides precision inspection with 360° continuous rotation, intelligent defogging for humid and cold conditions, and 100 m+ OSRAM night vision. The all-metal armoured shell is IP67 rated and the magnetic quick-deployment mount lets it be moved between machines.

Installation notes for plant

  • Use a protective cover on every exposed camera. It is far cheaper to replace a cover than a thermal core.
  • Mount on the rigid structure, not on guards or panels that flex or can be removed.
  • Strain-relieve every cable within 150 mm of the connector, and use a service loop so vibration does not load the termination.
  • Add a master isolator. Plant electrical systems are noisy and often poorly regulated. An isolator also lets the system be shut down for maintenance without disconnecting the battery.
  • Bench-test the image before final fitting. Dust and vibration make intermittent faults hard to find later.

What to measure after deployment

  • Pedestrian-proximity alarms per shift, reviewed against the shift plan rather than daily.
  • Camera and cover damage rate, which tells you whether mounting positions need moving.
  • Detection events during dust and at night specifically — this is where the thermal channel earns its cost.
  • Uptime per machine per month. Plant cameras fail from impact; track the rate and inspect the worst offenders.
