Cameras for Chemical Plants, Tankers and Sites That Eat Aluminium

Where salt, acid, fertiliser or hydrocarbon vapour is present, an aluminium housing corrodes from the outside in. Stainless steel and explosion-proof designs are not a luxury — they are the only specification that survives.

A camera housing on a tanker, in a fertiliser plant or on a chemical works is exposed to an aggressive atmosphere every hour of every day. Aluminium alloy that performs perfectly on a highway truck will show pitting within a season, and the first failure is usually water ingress through the corroded seal face rather than a failed sensor.

Our 304 stainless range uses a machined stainless body with precision sealing and a heating module that defrosts the lens in cold weather. The result is a camera that holds a clear image in freezing conditions and survives decades of corrosive exposure.

Specifying for a corrosive or hazardous site

  • Identify the hazard first. Corrosion and explosion risk are different problems. A coastal fleet needs stainless and sealing; a fuel depot needs a certified explosion-proof enclosure. Specify both where both apply.
  • Insist on the certification documents. For hazardous areas the paperwork is part of the product, and we supply the certification documentation with the explosion-proof models.
  • Add heating if the site freezes. A stainless camera with an iced-over lens fails exactly when the site most needs surveillance, and lens icing is more common than buyers expect because the housing stays cold and attracts condensation.
  • Plan the connector. The best housing fails at the connector. Use sealed aviation connectors with a drip loop, and never leave a connector lying horizontal where water can pool.
  • Check wash-down chemistry. Aggressive alkaline or acidic cleaning agents attack seals as well as metal. Tell us what the site uses and we will confirm compatibility.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does 304 stainless buy me over aluminium?

Primarily pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride and acid environments, plus much better impact resistance. On a coastal fleet or in a fertiliser plant the service-life difference is measured in years, and it often pays for itself against the labour cost of repeatedly replacing aluminium housings.

How does the automatic heating work?

A temperature sensor in the housing switches the heating element on as the assembly approaches freezing, clearing frost and condensation from the front glass, and switches off once the lens is clear. It is fully automatic — no driver action and no separate controller.

Do you supply accessories for these models?

Yes — sealed brackets, protective covers and aviation extension cables are available. For stainless installations we particularly recommend the protective cover, because it takes the direct impact of stone strikes and wash jets rather than the housing seal.
