IP69K vs IP68 vs IP67: What Vehicle Camera Ratings Really Mean
Two cameras can both be called waterproof and behave completely differently after a year of pressure washing. The rating number is only meaningful if you know what it tests — and what it does not.
Reading an IP code
An IP rating has two digits. The first is solid-particle protection, from 0 to 6. The second is liquid protection, from 0 to 9 (with 9K as a distinct high-pressure test). So IP69K means dust-tight (6) and resistant to close-range, high-pressure, high-temperature water (9K).

Why IP68 and IP69K are not comparable
IP68 tests immersion: the object sits in still water and nothing is pushed at it. IP69K tests a jet: water is driven at the seal at high pressure and high temperature. A camera can pass IP68 comfortably and fail IP69K because the seal that holds still water is not the same seal that holds a jet.
This matters commercially. A fleet that washes vehicles with a pressure washer several times a week should specify IP69K regardless of how impressive the IP68 rating sounds. A vehicle that is occasionally submerged in a ford does not need IP69K. The two tests answer different questions.
Where the rating does not help you
- The connector. A certified camera connected to an uncertified connector is an uncertified assembly. Most water ingress in service happens at the connector, not through the housing. Use sealed aviation connectors, fit them where water cannot pool, and leave a drip loop.
- The seal after service. Every time a housing is opened — to change a lens, replace a cable — the seal is disturbed. Reassembly technique matters, and a damaged O-ring is invisible from outside.
- Thermal shock. A hot camera hit with cold water, or a warm camera washed in freezing conditions, stresses seals in a way the standard test does not reproduce. Wash a recently used vehicle carefully.
- Chemical attack. Cleaning agents, diesel, fertiliser and acid attack rubber and silicone seals over time. An IP rating says nothing about chemical compatibility.
- Cable entry and glands. The cable entry is the second most common ingress path after the connector, particularly when the cable is not strain-relieved.
- Impact damage. A cracked lens cover voids every protection the housing offers. Fit a protective cover where stone strikes are likely.

How to test a camera you already have
- Check the connector seal first — a visual inspection for cracks, hardening or missing O-rings finds most failures before they happen.
- Look for water inside the lens cover. Condensation that appears in the morning and clears by midday means the housing has already taken water.
- Inspect the cable entry for chafing and for strain on the gland.
- Check the mating faces for corrosion, which raises the surface and breaks the seal.
Frequently asked questions
Is IP69K better than IP68?
They test different things. IP69K is better for fleets that pressure-wash vehicles; IP68 is appropriate for equipment that may be submerged. If you wash with a jet — which almost every commercial fleet does — IP69K is the more relevant specification.
Why is my IP69K camera fogging up?
Almost always because of a disturbed seal, a damaged O-ring, or a connector that has taken water. The rating applies to an intact assembly. Also check the cable entry — a gland that has been strained can let water track along the cable into the housing.
Does IP69K mean the camera can be steam cleaned?
IP69K includes a test at up to 80 °C and 100 bar at close range, so steam cleaning is within the design intent. In practice, keep the jet oblique rather than perpendicular to the seal faces, and avoid holding the lance on the connector.
